Rickenbacker Model B Selmer

1935

Those of you with a trained eye will have immediately recognized this 1935 Rickenbacker Model B Spanish Neck, distributed in the UK under the Selmer badge. It is quite simply the first solid-body electric guitar to be mass-produced. This is not a lap steel. The original black Bakelite body is in good condition, with a sober, distinctly Art Deco design. It is fitted with the legendary Rickenbacker “horseshoe” magnet pickup, delivering an immediate attack, long sustain, and a clear yet thick tone—with a biting edge. Output level is very high, and when paired with a small period amplifier, one quickly wonders why rock ’n’ roll wasn’t invented earlier, since the gear already existed. This organic saturation through a small vintage tube amp, for example, is absolutely phenomenal, and no pedal can truly replicate it. The control layout is extremely simple, with just a single volume knob—a small peculiarity of the very earliest models.

A very fine example for a 90-year-old instrument, with cosmetic wear consistent with its age.
