Rickenbacher Electric Mandolin

1935

This is a once-in-a-lifetime find: a true piece of history. It is one of the very first electric mandolins made by Rickenbacher, before the company Americanized its name with a “k,” as you can see on the small metal plate. Quite simply, it is one of the earliest electric instruments ever produced.

The metal plate and the pearloid headstock are typical of this era. It is fitted with a 6-pole horseshoe pickup and a Vib-Rola tremolo system—the very first vibrato system invented by Doc Kauffman in the early 1930s.

This instrument was most likely restored a long time ago. The fingerboard binding was replaced, the pickup wires were spliced, and an overspray was applied to the entire instrument. The tuning machines are original, but the white buttons have been replaced. According to current consensus, the bodies of these mandolins were manufactured by Harmony, after which Rickenbacher converted them into electric instruments.

The frets still have plenty of life left. The neck is straight with no issues—it’s ready to play. This is a fantastic-sounding instrument that will absolutely blow you away. The reputation of these pickups speaks for itself.

It’s a very comfortable and easy instrument to play, in addition to being a historically significant piece.
