Gibson A style Mandolin. Orville Label

1909-1911

Dated to approximately 1909–1911 based on its original features, this A-style mandolin features a carved top and back, oval soundhole, glued tortoise-style pickguard, and the original “pineapple” tailpiece (the cover is missing, which is common on these early examples). The interior label is quite rare; to my knowledge, I have never had another example like this in the shop. It features a portrait of Orville Gibson along with the inscription “Patented February 1st, 1898.” A number is present, with no visible Factory Order Number (FON); dating is therefore based primarily on construction details and original hardware rather than the number alone.

The instrument was professionally restored at some point in the past—exact dating of the work is not possible, but the quality is clearly high and the restoration itself has some age. The finish has been partially oversprayed, and the body binding has been replaced. The tuners are original, with only the buttons replaced. The overall result is very satisfying, and the mandolin presents beautifully. It has been photographed under two different lighting conditions, as black instruments can be difficult to capture accurately against a dark background.

The mandolin is supplied with a properly fitted hard case.
