Gibson L-4
1921
The instrument you see here was made over 100 years ago, 104 years to be precise. This L-4 probably began its life playing blues and jazz, most likely in the USA, since these guitars were only very marginally imported to us, most often by travelers or on the occasion of a special order. During its long life it was restored, although I cannot be precise on the date, it seems that the work dates back a few decades. Two cracks were stabilized on the top and the entire instrument was refinished in a pretty cherry sunburst shade that suits it very well. The guitar is stable and sound. These necks are indestructible, I have never seen any that had warped. It has a V-shaped profile. I know it might scare some people, but in my opinion, it’s actually quite comfortable and allows you to rest your thumb comfortably in the middle of the neck. The tuners are quality reissues that work very well. The sound is definitely retro, quite medium, of course, and perfectly suited to blues, jazz, and ragtime registers.
It comes in a modern hardshell case that will protect it well for centuries to come…
