Rare 1981 Greco MSV-850, made in Japan during the celebrated \u201cSuper Real\u201d era, widely regarded as one of the golden periods of Greco production.<\/p>\n
The MSV-850 was Greco\u2019s take on the iconic black-and-white Flying V associated with Michael Schenker, a guitar that became inseparable from his image during the late UFO years and the early Michael Schenker Group period. Produced only for a relatively short period around 1981-82, the MSV-850 is considerably harder to find today than most Greco Les Paul-style models from the same era.<\/p>\n
According to Japanese information available on the model, the dimensions of the MSV were reportedly based on measurements taken from an instrument actually used by Schenker, allowing Greco\u2019s craftsmen to reproduce its proportions and distinctive appearance as accurately as possible. The striking black-and-white finish is, of course, immediately recognizable as Schenker\u2019s signature Flying V look.<\/p>\n
The MSV-850 was a serious instrument within the Greco range. As was customary with Greco at the time, the model number reflected its original list price of \u00a585,000, placing it well above the company\u2019s entry-level instruments.<\/p>\n
Construction is typical of high-quality Japanese guitars from this period, with a mahogany body, mahogany set neck and rosewood fingerboard. It is fitted with a pair of excellent Greco\/Maxon PU-2 humbuckers, consistent with the known original specifications of the MSV-850. Highly regarded among players and collectors of early-1980s Greco guitars, these pickups deliver a powerful, mid-focused tone that works equally well from clean sounds through to the high-gain hard-rock tones for which this type of guitar became famous.<\/p>\n
With its short production run, instantly recognizable Michael Schenker aesthetic and early-1980s Japanese construction, the MSV-850 has become one of the more interesting and difficult-to-find Greco Flying V models from the period.<\/p>\n
This 1981 example weighs only 3.30 kg. It shows various scratches, dings and general signs of use consistent with its age. The neck is in good condition, the truss rod is adjustable, and the guitar comes with a generic hard case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
